Friday 31 May 2013 - Singapore

email from Mum -

Day before Singapore, we crossed the equator and of course had the usual Equator Ceremony where several people were chastised by King Neptune and his Queen. They were smeared with jelly and custard and cooked spaghetti. The Captain got a dunking in full uniform including his cap.

In Singapore we visited Chinatown and an old house, now a museum showing the living conditions 100 to 150 years ago. Very small rooms, narrow, dark staircases. They have installed a lift and air conditioning, but both were out of order on the day we visited so we crawled up 3 flights in the nice warm weather. Many declined.

Next stop was the Selangor Pewter Gallery. We were shown a workroom and displays of the works and then led into another workshop of Hard Knocks. Here we were given a workstation each with apron and tools to knock a 6 inch pewter plate into a bowl. First we stamped our name on the bottom and then the hard work started. We could take the apron and bowl home with us. Jurjong Bird Park was our next stop. Many beautiful birds also very clever ones.

DAY TOUR =
Chinatown, Pewter Demonstration & Raffles
You will visit... Thian Hock Keng Temple, Chinatown/Sri Mariamman Temple, Raffles Hotel  Departing your ship, you'll board your motorcoach for a scenic ride through the streets of Singapore on your way to Chinatown to experience the rich Chinese culture. You'll tour the informative Chinese Cultural Centre, then get to spend some time exploring the maze of awning-draped shops and market stalls. Peruse the shops for bargains and souvenirs, sample the delicious food, and visit the beautiful temples, including Sri Mariamman Temple, the oldest Hindu temple in the city.
Next, you're off to Royal Selangor Pewter, for a lesson in "hard knocks." Malaysia is famous for its pewter ware. At Royal Selangor, you'll visit the Pewter Gallery and learn, about the beauty and versatility of pewter. Then, using just a few simple tools, you'll get to create and personalize a pewter dish of your own under the guidance of an experienced pewter smith.
You'll next depart for one of the most famous sites in the city, the legendary Raffles Hotel. Immortalized in the novels of Somerset Maugham and Rudyard Kipling, the colonial-styled architecture and lush tropical gardens exude an atmosphere of timeless elegance. It's truly one of the world's greatest hotels and home of the famous Singapore Sling cocktail. The Singapore Sling was created in 1915 in the hotel's Long Bar l, frequented by celebrities and writers such as Joseph Conrad and Charlie Chaplin. You'll watch as a bartender demonstrates how to create a Singapore Sling before getting to partake in one yourself. Then, roam about the grounds, stepping into the footsteps of visitors who have enjoyed this special place for over 120 years. Visit the Raffles Hotel Museum looks at the history of Raffles Hotel largely in the context of the Golden Age of Travel, roughly 1880 to 1939, when Singapore was known as the "Crossroads of the East."

Afterward, you'll return to your motorcoach for the short ride back to your ship, reliving the colour, art and history of this wonderful city.

Thursday 30 May 2013 - Happy Birthday Mum.....

We organised a surprise for mum today -

(message from mum)

THANK YOU BOTH VERY, VERY MUCH.
I came back to my room and could smell flowers down the hallway.  They are beautiful and smell very nice too.  You are both spoiling me.

I also got a card from the Captain and the crew, and the big sign on the door with blue and white balloons.  I have been more spoilt!
I also got a card from the Maitre'd to present to my head waiter (for my birthday cake! )
Also a few minutes ago Room Service arrives with Chocolate Dipped Strawberries.  How am I going to keep the kilos off?  I have also received an email birthday card from Princess
Just getting ready to go for dinner....

Thursday 23 May to 30 May 2013 - a few days at sea

(email and sms notes from mum )

Thursday 24/5 - I have just finished lunch as we passed Cairns.  A couple at our table come from Cairns, but boarded in Sydney after visiting family there.

We played carpet bowls again today, the blue team won by 2 points.  Many balls had a bit too much speed and ended over the line, some not enough and stopped halfway. While waiting for the game to start I had a cappuccino with a lady working on a cross stitch.  She is doing a sampler for her daughter getting married next year.

Saturday 25/5 - Just back from breakfast.  I had muesli with a banana and smoked salmon with cream cheese and a toasted bagel.  Apple juice and a pot of tea.  Last night we had vegetable soup and grilled wahoo steak salad.  The fish was a bit dry, but nice flavour.

Carpet bowls are on again this morning, then some Morning Trivia before lunch    Internet café opens at 3 so I will visit there and get some help with my uncooperative pictures.

As instructed I have been around to take a few photos.  I will try and import them so you can see what we do.  I have been trying to attach photos without luck.

We passed Cape York around lunch time, an hour later a medical emergency and a passenger was airlifted off the ship with a medical emergency so there is a spare cabin if anyone wants to join me.

Monday 27/5  - Tonight I was on my own at our table, it speeded up service time no end.

Bowls are going good.  Today we played Australia vs The World.  The World won of course, 27 to 19.  No trophies though.  I had a go at Bingo this afternoon, 1 short of 2 lines and $78.  The weather is nice and warm out on deck, but the air conditioning is a little cool without a light jacket, we range between 25 to 30 degrees and 78% humidity.  I have not been in the pool yet as it is in the open and we have had showers the last two days.

Wednesday 29/5 - Had a swim this morning and then helped the green team win bowls 21-19.  This afternoon I had my nana nap and then went down for a coffee and more cross stitch.

Dinner was lovely - gravlax, asparagus soup with salmon julienne, lobster and monkfish with begs, lime pie with fresh cream.  After dinner the crew put on an energetic country show - very good.

Thursday 30 May - I indulged in a sleep in this morning.  It is 8.10 at the moment I have just put my feet on the carpet.  (normally I get up around 7.30)  I will be heading up to the Horizon for breakfast in a few minutes.  Up there they have more choice and you can have big or small serving as you please.

We have been forecast 24 - 34 degrees today so I had better remember to drink plenty of water.  The last 2 days the sea has been so calm it is like sailing on a pond,  not even enough to lull me to sleep, I have to read.

A calm day at sea - Tues 28 May

Wednesday 22 May 2013 (Day 3) Brisbane, Australia

first of many ports on this amazing trip....

Brisbane, Australia
Once considered the "country cousin" among Australian cities, Brisbane is today the nation's third-largest metropolis - and one of the most desirable places to live in the country. Lying on the banks of the meandering Brisbane River, this cosmopolitan city boasts elegant 19th-century sandstone buildings, a lively cultural scene and superb parklands. Brisbane is also your gateway to uniquely Australian adventures, be it the theme parks of the Gold Coast or Queensland's dazzling beaches.

MUM'S DAY TRIP =    Australia Zoo
Founded by the late Steve Irwin, TV's "Crocodile
Hunter," this 70-acre zoo is home to exotic wildlife,
such as fresh and salt-water crocodiles, koalas,
kangaroos and giant pythons.

Monday 20 May 2013 - sailing off into the sunset...

As you can see Mum looks so sad she is leaving us for just over 3 mths to travel around the world. My sister Lisa took mum to Sydney to meet up with the ship on Monday and they set sail at 4pm.

Day One on the cruise and Mum said:
I had a nice relaxing day as we travelled up the east coast of Australia toward Brisbane.  I played golf and got into the finals but did not win.  For dinner - Beef Consomme followed by Seafood parcel with Apple Strudel and Creme Anglais. After dinner it was off to watch a show with a few people from the table.
